Change Agian

We have decide to alter our idea again. For one we decided that the whole prison location was out of the question because we couldn’t think of a suitable location to film for the prison shot. We thought about it and came up with the conclusion that we could change the Prison escape to as mental hospital escape and we could use PeasLake as the location as it was an old health ward. It also has plain white corridors in which we can use to film the trolley scene. the beginning scene stay the same up to the point where the van driver stop.

The Thriller is more or less the same except the prisoner is now a patient. He fakes his death in order to escape. He is transported out of the institute in a body bag on a stretcher and put in van. Now instead of the van driver stopping a gas station he stops of at the side of the road because he hears a thump in  the back. The thump is the patient trying to distract the driver so he will step out of the van to check in which he will ambush him. The driver steps out of the van and goes round to the back of the van and opens the doors, as soon as he opens the doors the Patient kicks the driver to the ground and then pulls out a gun that was placed in the van for him, the driver on the floor crawling backwards with rising tense music. The patient takes his shot and shoots the driver with just the in focus shot of the gun and the out of focus shot of the patients face as he pulls the trigger. Then the screen turns to black and the title of the film.

Hollywood Prison style

In our thriller we want to go for a very hollywood, american style prison, Including high security, fences barb wired, electrical fences, bright orange jumpsuits, armed heavy guards, big scary dogs, to really set the scene of a grim and dark environment were criminals are sentenced. To pull this off we need to find a location that has heavy barbed wired fences, maybe a watch tower, heavy gates and a large dusk building for the prison

The bright orange jump suits also will pull off the very stereotypical holly wood style. Our main character, the escaping prisoner, needs to look very fearsome and dangerous to pull off a very stereotypical hollywood prisoners. the prisoner need to big and muscly to make the audience more thrilled and to set the scene of the dangerous environment. makeup including tattoos and scars, cuts and scabs add to the effect.

All these features dramatise the whole prison effect and thats what holly wood does, it makes it more exiting and thrilling to watch. the holly wood effect on our thriller will empathises it a lot more in terms of a thriller

Raze up, CGI explosion

This is one of the old Thrillers made last year, in this thriller there is a really good example of a CGI animated explosion as the car blows to pieces. i think that the editing in this was very good, the explosion looked very life like and i think that an explosion like this in our thriller for the gas station explosion would really work when the convict throws the lighter behind him after lighting his cig and the gas station to light up and then explode. the music in the scene really builds up the tension, the music gets louder as the towl burns closer to the pump socket and when the beat drops the explosion comes in.

Law Abiding Citizen

This is a shot of the outside of a prison in the film Law Abiding Citizen. which is a film about a man who get revenge on the murders that killed his family and gets convicted and sentence, who still manages to kill people from his cell. This is a really good example of a prison escape film as in the film the convict manages to get out of prison to kill and return by the night to his cell by creating an underground tunnel that leads him out of the prison. This is the ideal shot we are looking for in our film as it has a , van parked outside the prison gates, with a really good shot of the prison and security such as barb wire fencing, guards and dogs.

This is another ideal shot we want to use in our film. this is the shot of the dodgy trolly wheel thats flickers when being pushed by the convict. this is again from the film Law Abiding Citizen. when a steak is being delivered to to the convict as a source of bribery. this is a low level shot and close up of the dodgy trolly wheel with the burry background approaching as the trolly is pushed forward.

In the film the main character who we follow in the film turns bad. in the beginning of the film the character is good to us and we want him to succeed because we know he is a good guy, throughout the film we start to loose grip with the character and he turns bad ans starts killing people. in our thriller, our main character is bad aswel as he is a guilty convict who is escaping only to cause more havoc, very much like law abiding citizen. i only discovered the film about 3 weeks after we thought of our idea and film happend to satisfy a few of our ideal shots. We dont even know that the main character exists until he jumps out the back of that van in the gas station and i think that it will satisfy the audience need for contact with the main character.

New Prison Break Idea

Beginning: The sequence starts out with a dodgy trolley wheel moving quickly down the hallway. It cuts to the ceiling lights following them down the hall, flickering. The camera then tilts down as we see a man pushing the trolley down the hall. Next the over the shoulder shot changes to a POV shot from the point of the view of the man pushing the trolley. After this we get a shot of the content of the cart, which is a couple of large laundry bags. As he pushes the cart along the hallway, we see a door up ahead which he opens and immediately outside is a van with open doors and two security guards on either side of it. Next we see the bags being flung into the van and get a close up shot of the doors being shut and the van driving away all in one cut.

Middle: After the van drives away we get a POV from the van driver looking back at the prison to set the scene of where the bag has just come from. This makes the audience aware that the corridor belongs to a prison. Inside the van we get a shot of the bag as it slides form left to ride due to the cars movement. The driver looks into rear-view-mirror with a devious expression. Next we get a view of the van from the outside, to show where it is driving (this may vary depending on where we shoot). While on the road, we get the opening credits and the title “Prison Break”. The van pulls up to a gas station. The driver exits the vehicle and purposely misplaces the gas so that it is leaking onto the side of the van and the ground. He then bangs on the back door of the car twice to signify to the man in the bag that he has the okay to go. We watch the driver walk away form the van with no intention of returning.

End: Next we see the bag slice open but we don’t see who is inside. We see the security guard who was unaware of the bag opening, stand up but then fall back down because his neck has been snapped. Next we hear the van doors open as we only see the feet of this unidentified man jump out (shot is taken from under the van). He walks a little before we get an up-close shot of his mouth as he lights a cigarette. In slow motion we see the lighter flick open and the flame come out. He then throws back the lighter onto the leaking car as the car explodes. END.

How to Create a Storyboard for Your Video Shoot

We have gotten to the stage in our thriller when we have  to start building up a story board to plan each scene, camera angles editing, a rough story board and mapping flow of our thriller before we start to get into the detail. Building a story board is crucial to any shooting sequence. It maps out your ideas so that you can refer back to it and you have everything noted down so you don’t forget some of you ideas.
The story board doesn’t have to be neat or perfects is just a basic outline of what’s and who’s in the shot. The location of the shot and all the angles you use. A storyboard can just be a drawing of the shot that you want to take it can be a simple as that. Storyboarding your ideas helps you to evolve you ideas. It is a great a form brainstorming whilst progressing along the way.

In Our Group me and Alicia started to come up with other good prison break ideas for our thriller because we loved the idea of a prison break but we wanted to vary our ideas.
We started researching on line of good prison break that have happened before and we tried to think of some ourselves.
We came up with a variety of ideas of which were:

Laundry Van escapes
Knocking out and stealing electricians or plumbers costume to escape
Taking out security guard
Hostages
Digging or chiseling out, for example Shaw Shank Redemption
Zip wire
Through sewage
Outside or guard helper
Bribe
Climbing over fence
Shank
Faking death using capsule, girl friend of prisoner could give the capsule to thy prisoner from mouth to mouth kissing over visitor time

Prelim Group 13 Ivo Bella Luka Olivia Alicia

There are two differently edited versions of our prelim. We split off into to groups in our group. This is the version that I, Luca and Bella edited together using final cut pro. When filming this we had to keep on reminding ourselves of the 180 degree rule. I think that we got some good angles in the prelim and it was quite successful, i think that we got some really interesting shots. I wasn’t so happy about the fact that we were shooting in the editing sweep when trying to shoot a western but the whole point of the exercise was to test our skills and knowledge on the camera continuity, angles of the shot and editing.

Kyle Cooper Demo Reel

Kyle Coopers demo real was very interesting as a lot of his work our in films and adverts that I am really fond off. The way that he combines digital animation with film is really interesting. You can depict by watching Kyle Coopers work that he creates each sequence title he does in a very detailed manner.  You can see that he likes to mind map and study every aspect of the subject he is creating. He experiments with allot of his work.” I like finding the Hand made things, there something imperfect about it”. Some of his most genius sequence are Experiments and the product of successful accidents. “Some of my favourite title sequences encapsulate the main characters obsession”, for example Coopers title sequence for seven, coopers obsesses over the detail of the serial killers own obsession to get a better sight of the killers way of life. I found seven a really good and inspiring sequence. The way that the close up shots glitch into one another with robot stereo music in the back.
In our media presentation we discussed the prison break idea and we all decided that this was probably the best idea we have amongst all of our ideas. As it has never been done before the media technicians enjoyed the idea because they believed it would be more interesting for us to film. But also very simple in a way to film for us which makes it easier. The thought that it could be very stylized but could also have an element of super hero in the sequence. Or equally it could be very unexpected with a fat man with food in his beard. Which would be interesting, as you wouldn’t be expecting it.

Presenting our ideas to the media staff

We presented our ideas to the media staff yesterday and after discussing our group ideas we came up with some conclusions of what ideas would tick the most boxes.

Our first idea which was about the paranormal creature. After discussing the idea we thought that it would be a bit cliche and unoriginal

The second idea was about the prison break,  The staff really enjoyed this idea. They found it very interesting and they thought if we could expand on it a little more that it would work really well. They proposed the idea that the idea could involve some sort of super being. They thought this idea had so many branches to work from.

The third idea was about the kidnapping from a carnival
They did like this idea as it was very different from any other ideas they have had before. They told us that it would be an entertaining sequence but very difficult to pull off in the short space of time we have. As the filming would be done in the winter and not many carnival take place in the winter. We did try to think of other ways we could pull of the carnival effect such as filming on a green screen. It is still an option but would be very hard to film.

The fourth idea we decided not to discuss as Adam had told us that it was far to cliche and as it is a very well known story that it might not be as good as we would have liked.

Conclusion.
We got a lot of useful information to reflect on about the ideas. It was also good to get more opinions on the ideas as they would be part of the audience for our prelim sequence and we are aiming to pitch our ideas to them.

First Production

Our Group
- Alicia
- Alexandra
- Ivo

- After Adam sat us together in our groups, we began to brainstorm and rearrange our individual ideas and narrow these down to our final three thriller opening sequences. This is what we came up with in our group.

Idea 1: There is a couple driving through the forest around Hurtwood. Suddenly an unknown, paranormal creature flies, in a blur, across the road. Though confused, the couple believes it best to keep driving. When the creature appears again, the couple stops their car to investigate. Again nothing occurs so the couple continues on driving. The scene ends when all of a sudden the creature, a female beast, is standing in front of the car. (Alternate option, one never sees the face of the beast, merely the terrified expression of the face of the couple in the car). The creature could in someone hit the car.

Good:
  1. On location
  2. Simple
  3. Low budget
  4. No extras
  5. Easy access to actors

Bad:
  1. Blur may be difficult
  2. Headlights of the other car filming may cause a continuity problem

Idea 2: A Prison Break, the screen starts off black with the camera facing a dark brick wall. One can hear banging and thumping. The opening credit text is displayed in different bricks. A small but strong glimpse of light shines through the cracks of the wall as it begins to crumble. One of the bricks falls out of the wall and one can see a man peer through the gap. Next the thumping gets louder and harder. Suddenly the wall crumbles down and the silhouette of a man appears, created by light in the backdrop of him facing the camera from an angle. The man then walks to the camera and covers the lens, as the screen turns black.

Good:
  1. Simple
  2. Easily Done
  3. Effective
  4. Low Budget
  5. Only one actor
  6. On location

Bad:
  1. May be too simple for 4 minutes

Idea 3: The scene starts off at a carnival. There are heightened noises of kids playing and having fun. Interesting camera angles of the different rides add for an intriguing and interesting effect. Through a crowd of people we are made aware of the family the scene will be focusing on. There is a mother with her three children walking around eating cotton candy. Though she is their mother, she still seems quite overwhelmed with having three young children at a carnival. The daughter, roughly 6 years old, decides to take a picture with a huge teddy bear. As the bear huge her, the mother’s view of her daughter is blinded. The scene ends with her camera in the shot. On the picture that she took it is clearly evident that there is hand coming out of the teddy bear costume and when she looks back up, her daughter is gone.

Good:
  1. Interesting

Bad:
  1. Not location
  2. Need extras
  3. High Budget
  4. Not simple

Idea 4: Female (or male) is driving through a forest when all of a sudden she sees a figure placed in the middle of the road. Believing this figure is a human body; she steps out of the car to take a closer look. What she doesn’t know is that as she got out of the car, another person crept into her car. Upon realizing that the figure was just an old ratty carpet, she resumes her drive through the woods. While the person got in, another car came up and noticed what was happening to this poor girl. As the girl continues on driving, the car behind tries to warn her, by flashing his/her lights and honking. It is too late though because the end shot is of her looking in her headlights and seeing there a dark figure in her car with her.

Good:
  1. Interesting
  2. Scary
  3. On Location

Bad:
  1. Not simple

Ideas For Opening Sequences

A Prison Break, the screen starts off black with the camera facing a dark brick wall. You hear banging ands thumping. The opening credit text is displayed on different bricks. A small but strong glimpse of light shines through the cracks of the wall as it begins to crumble. One of the bricks falls out of the wall and you see a man peer through the gap and then Begins to thump harder. Suddenly the wall crumbles down and the silhouette of a man appears, created by light in the back drop of him facing the camera from an angle. The man then walks to the camera and covers the lens, screen turns black

Astronaut on the moon, retrieving samples inside the moons craters. Lowers himself down with harness and cord. Suddenly a defining high pitch roar and the cord is cut. The astronaut plummets the bottom of the wide, deep crater. Breaks good leg and sprains his shoulder. he cannot see around him as it is pitch black. He is stuck in the crater while the dark side of the moon is creeping up on him.

Editing the Prelim.
For editing the prelim we used used final cut pro. this is a very professional software for Apple macs.  we retrieved all our caches from final cut sever, a program that stores all original shots on a shared area which you can retrieve your project from. we use final cut because it is a great software for the projects we are making throughout the year. final cut pro is a phenomenally complicated piece of kit. I use this software regularly and i have it my laptop so i had already got to grips with it. In final cut we made two different boxes to store our clips in different folders. The Original clips, the bin, and the ones we wanted to use out of them. We were shown by Matt and Adam how to select the points of the clip we wanted to use to put forward in the prelims by using the "i" and "o" keys on the keyboard, selecting the in and out points of the clip. W were already cutting down the clips and adjusting them by mid way though the lesson. we got to grips fairly easy with it. we finished the editing process within two lessons.

Lord Of War. Life Of A Bullet intro.

This opening title sequence is one of my favourite opening scenes to a film. This is a really entertaining sequence that follows the life of a bullet from factory into war. I find the sequence very interesting and I really enjoy the special effects used.
The music used in the sequence,"For What It's Worth", Buffalo Springfield, fits the sequence very well. It’s a relaxing piece of music and at the end of the sequence when the bullet is fired the music suddenly stops in a harsh way and the scene becomes much tenser. The final scene comes as a great shock to the audience as suddenly the mood of the sequence changes.

Shooting The Prelim

In our class we were split up into three groups. In my group there were five of us and we had to come up with a scene and a setting for a prelim script that adam had set us. We decided to do a western scene so on Thursday the 20th of september, our shooting day, Adam brought in some props for us to use to set the scene of a western setting. The props were 2 cowboy hats, a whiskey bottle and 2 shot glasses.

We chose to use cowboy hats as they are a very identifiable signifier from a very well know genre.  We  told to work up in the editing swept, wehe we set up our props.

Luca- Cowboy1
Bella- Cowboy2
Elisia- Continuity girl
Liv-Director
Ivo- Camera man

We shot a few practice shots without recording just to get a glimpse of what the scene would look like. this is the script to the left. we had to act this out and film it. our croup consisted of 2 actors, a camera man (me), a continuity girl and a director.

The shot in the script was a wide shot. the wide is a great scene for setting the scene. it is also great for cutting back to throughout out the the prelim.
we shot they whole scene in the wide shot to start with so that we could cut back to it. We then moved the camera over the Cowboy2's shoulder as in the the script.  We were aware of the 180° Rule, shoulder to shoulder in abiding the 180° Rule.

The script was great for a practice session for shooting. we just had to film the scenes. We didn't have to worry about script at all.
