This is our front page of the website. we showed the site to our feedback audience. they thought that it suited the video and went with the overall theme. they really liked the layout and said it was easy to access everything. they thought that it might be a bit to busy on the front page of the site but we can change it.

This is a jumper that I made for the merchandise on the website. I used a picture from the shoot and blended it into the black top. I got a picture of jelly fish from the internet and blended it into the hand pocket of the jumper.

The audience really liked the merchandise, they said it was well suited to the video and it had the same colour scheme.

Digi Pack

I have Been working on the Digi Pack in for our cover. I have used photos from the shot and edited them using Photoshop and played around until I found a design that I think looks aesthetically pleasing and suited to the theme of the song. I explored different styles of Fonts and played with the layer in Photoshop.

When creating the album cover I got a shot of Gil and Luke from the photo shoot we took on the film day. I got a picture of lighting, taken with a slow shutter speed of the internet and edited into the background of gil and luke, blending the meth lab into it as well.
For the Frontier Font I used a camo effect on it and spread a blurred white back drop so it would show up. For the Band name I used the same camo style but in white and used the smudge tool to get a messy effect. I played about with the contrast with the picture and I the sharpen effect to get a nice crisp image that contrasts well. i need to make

We had a viewing of our products from a random audience. They were showed all three products and we got some interesting feedback. they told us that that they liked the album cover, although the band name wasn't very visible. they said they liked the lightning but it could do with making everything less busy on the cover.

For the back cover I used the same effect. I changed the colour of the lightning to purple and raise the contrast on the image to make it darker and much more vibrant.
I used a slightly luminous font to draw the audiences eye  and I got a cd cover barcode of the internet and stuck it in.

The audience really liked the back cover of our digi pack they said that it was much more easy to look at than the front of the album. they liked the band names and the image.

Rough Cut

we have put together our rough cut for our music video. I think it is looking really good in my opium and based on feedback from our student.

We have used a variety of effects in our such as colourising, fisheye and contrast. I am really happy with the cut we have made and how they are synced to the video. we have got some very positive feedback from the media staff  and a teenage audience because our audience has a wide range. At the beginning of the video we shows a lot of close up shot of beakers and bottles. We didn’t want to give away the whole appearance of the lab in the first couple of shot so we left it to the drop. I think that the shots with oli in look really cool as I have lower the contrast so it looks more sinister. I have played about with the colour and contrast on the lab scenes as well to make it look more dim and more like a basement. I was really worried that we weren’t going to have enough shots and the video was going to look boring but the video actually progresses throughout and sustains a constant energy throughout. I think that the scene with the violin looks really well and I was surprised how it turned out. We have adjusted the speed in a lot of our scenes and used ramping in time to the beat, by starting off slow and the raise the speed to double, it turns out really well in some clips.
As the song is very fast moving and there are lots of samples we have had to make a cut almost every 2 - 3 seconds. I am really happy with my group as it has only taken us less than two weeks to almost final the final cut. I think that the rough cut looks really professional but I’m sure we can improve. A lot more effects need to be adjusted.

The beginning of the song we have used more slow cuts and a long slow-motion  scene of Luke taking a beaker out the fridge I really like the beginning of our video. I think that it goes well with the song as at the beginning and end the beat is much slower and so we have used 3 scenes of slo-mo at the end as well and the keep the middle bit fast.

Music Video Evaluation.

The day before our shoot we went into the studio at 3pm, just after the group before us had finished shooting there set. We set up the dingy meth lab scene first as it was the hardest set to make out of all three of our sets.  We pulled together three tables and put while cloth over them. For the back drop we used a brick wall set and metal grating. We covered the table cloth in food dye, mud and coffee to make it look like an exploding meth lab. We got all the flasks, test tubes, beakers and equipment from the chemistry department. We found an old fridge outside and brought it in because we thought that it would  fit the set perfectly. We got some bar carbonated soda from the chemistry lab and vinegar to make the eruptions in our set. We filled up the test tubes and equipment’s with food colouring and different coloured liquids and placed them around the set.

I was very excited when I woke up on the shoot day and was very confident after the great turn out of the meth lab. I was quite worried about any delay and if we were going fit everything in in the hours we had. I wasn’t worried about the sets because I knew that the meth lab was the hardest to make and we make it look like a genuine exploding meth lab.
For the first set we had prepared the night before so we were well prepared for the performance. We just placed the lights around the set and set up the tripod and we were ready to start shooting. For the next set we had everything sorted and organised. It was the school classroom so we got an easel from the art department. Pained a board black, so it looked like a black board. And got a desk from media department. For the back drop we got a white brick walls and carpet for the floor.

We spread the roles out very evenly between our group. For the first set we all took part in creating the realism and getting all the test tubes and flasks and covering the tables in coffee, mud and food dye. We each took turns filming. One person would films ad the other would be on the focus lens while the third member would be shouting orders at the actors on stage. I took control of the smoke machine and made sure that before each shot of the meth lab all the flasks, the cauldron and the fridge was filed up with smoke for the continuity. I took control of the camera for a bit and when round, free hand to try and get some interesting close up shots of the decks and experiments. I achieved some great focus shots by doing this of the vinyl decks which would be great for the intro of the music video.

I though that all three sets were very successful in the end. I was really pleasure with the meth lab. I though that the school classroom was a great turn out. I was most surprised with the space scene because that was our last set and we weren’t quite sure what we were doing for the scene, so we set up and star cloth back drop and a plastic rock floor, placed some in the background and a section I the foreground to create depth. We got a teacher called Steven to play the violin for us along to the music. And got some masks from the theatre department and some extras to wear them and go behind the sets. I think it worked out surprisingly well and so I was very surprised with that scene.

For the meth lab scene the actors worked really well, especially the Dj, gil. Luke, the partner was a bit shaky at the start but he got the hang of it. For the old school room set, oli played the part really well as we wanted someone to go crazy in front of the camera and thats what he did. For the space scene it looked very sinister having Steven playing the violin in space and that is what we wanted, so I think the overall acting was good quality.

I enjoyed filming the meth lab the most as I was so proud of the set we had managed to produce. I am looking forward to editing that scene the most in the post production as we managed to get some many interesting shots, including the close ups.

I learnt many thing on the shoot day. All sorts of different camera techniques and the result of them. For example I really enjoy using focus pulled shot, I though they were really effective. I learnt a lot about lighing that day and how to show significants to an object or someone by using some old lighting techniques..

I think that our overall band image is quite quirky and strange, I thought that the result of the shoot really fitted into the website we are currently constructing. We want the album art work to be very off topic to add to the quirkyness of the overall band image.

Day before shoot

We set up our first set today, the basment meth lab, we found three containers that we used as tables and got white table cloth and put it over them. To make the tables look grungy we got loads of coffee and food colouring and sprayed the table cloth to give the grungy feel. We got all the test tubes and flasks from the science department and loaded the tables up with it. For the back drop we used and brick wall set and a metal grated piece. It looks very realistic. We got a fringe we found outside and covered it in mud to make it look old and filthy. I am very pleased with the set we have made

These are the decks we are going to use. They are vinyl decks. We though that it would be much better to use vinyls because there is a lot of samples and scratching the the song. Here's a picture

Identifying The Audience

Done some research into the audience of acts of the same genre that are very similar to our act. Here is what I have managed to find out

The chemical brothers

British electronic music duo originating in 1991. Credited as being one of the few truly live electronic acts. Audience around 16- 40, new releasing albums been around for about 20 years. to research more into the audience of the chemical brothers I have looked at there live concerts and see roughly the age and genre of the crowd

here are some screen shots I have taken from their videos of their live concerts.
judging by the clothing and movement you can tell that there is quite a young looking crowd in these pictures, around 16-25. younger people tend to go to a lot more live concerts.

There is quite a lot of advertisement for their live concerts over the high streets in London. London high streets are filled with a lot of young people going shopping.

a started looking though the forums on the chemical brothers website. I look through a whole load of conversations online and a lot of profiles. I the majority of these people online chatting were between the ages of 15- 25, a much younger audience.

The majority of these profiles I check through were predominantly male, this is a great example of the online forum of a stereotypical fan. This boy is 17 years old who calls himself WhiteNoise . In his posts he raves about all the live shows he has attended and the art work that he has sent to the site. “I’m WhiteNoise. I like the chemical Brothers”.  He posted that his favourite thing about the chemical brothers were they reliability and closeness to the fans and the fact that they are just two normal guys but when together they completely change.

As most of the advertisement out there at the moment is through the use of the internet, e.g social networking, youtube, the younger generation accesses the internet a lot more than the later generation so they are more influenced by the advertisements and concerts.

The Gorillaz
As I was researching the Gorillaz active audience I came across their fan page, listed with forums, slideshows that people could post their own images relating to the Theme and style of the band, emailing list and extra behind the scene clips so the fan could interact more with the band.

I looked through the forums and found a few post where someone has drawn their own images relating to the original Gorillaz album art work. It shows that the Japanese style maga is part of the interest in the band.

This Picture below was actually drawn by a girl in my class.
She was telling me about her passion for manga and this style of drawing. The drawing is one the band member that she drew a couple of years back. The whole image of the band, the avatars, attract a much younger audience.

I went around asking  the class what age they had started listening to the ban and the average age was about 11/12. However the lead singer and creator of the band, Damian Albarn was the lead singer of Blur, which started up in 1989. Blur was very popular amongst  the later generation e.g 30- 50. My dad who is a massive fan of Blur and Damian Albarns work introduced me to Gorillaz as he is a big fan. this shows the age variety of the audience for the band.

Where we are shooting

we are shooting the whole thing in the studio we and we are going to have to set up three sets. the first one we are going to have to do is the meth lab because it will take the most preparation. here are some videos of the inside of the studio and some ideas that we have had.

i think that these stairs could be part of the intro, as the two cooks walk down into there basement to start their work.

this is the tour of the studio. we have got all the backdrops sorted for the shoot day.

this is the layout of the studio. I was thinking that we could have these large cupboards in the back ground full of beakers and equipment for cooking.

Prezi - Genres

We were asked to explore other artists of the same sort of genre and ake a look at there music videos, alburm art work and websites for ideas

Thursday, 31 October 2013

For part of our pinball idea we are going to film a close up of the ball running down the tracks. We are going to create this effect by using a large metal ball about 7 inches and build a track using flashing neon tubes that the ball can run down and filming this with a tracking shot. We are going to station the camera on a set of tracks and have the camera in-between the two rails that the ball is coming down and pull the camera back as the ball rolls down the tracks.

we have ordered a ball for this set

Looking into other videos

Four our fourth element we want to explore a whole variety of visual effects because that’s what a hallucinogenic drug trip is all about. We are looking into lots of possible scenes. For example we were thinking of having scots face gazing through a fish tank ant the camera. This is a music video that bex showed me and it has a lot of visual drug effects. There is one effect at 2:14 where there are lot of fish around his face

The 1975, sex music video there are a lot of cool visual effects when the boy is on the drug trip

At 2:13 there are some quite cool shot of different colour schemes and effects

We have decided to scrap the alien ideas of going into space by using the green screen. We have three elements of our video checked and ticked off.
The meth lab
The dunce
The pinball
Our shoot day has been announced as November the 13th, which is a Wednesday. We have from 3pm to 6ish to set up set the day before. We have selected our spots in the studio where we want to set up each set. We have going to have the meth lab set first because it is the hardest to set up as there is a lot of apparatus. We have asked Katy’s permission to use the flasks, beaker and all the equipment. For the chemical reaction we are going to use baking soda and vinegar with food dye.

We are also going to use dry ice which will give off a steamy effect and create bubbling. it is quite a slow reaction too so we would have a good time to film in.

The dunce scene has been given a tick. We have got all the props for the se. For our costume we are going to have an old school boy uniform. For the wall we are going to have a white painted brick wall back drop. Our chalk board is this special paper that we have ordered off the internet and we are going to paint it matte black so that it gives off the effect.  We also are building a frame for the board from wood. We have found a stool and are currently looking for a teacher’s desk to pull of the old classroom look.

we are meeting with luke this afternoon to discuss the pinball machine and see if it is accessible and to generally discuss our whole idea.

Rehearsals

We did some rehearsals with Oli for the dunce scene, just to get a glimpse of what it would look like and to test out his role. I got him into an empty class room with a white board so that we could practice. couldn't find the stall so i put him into a chair and got him to bob his had to the music.

I got Oli to scribble on the board and go crazy because we want lots of sped up scenes of the boy tripping out as the boy is supposedly on psychedelic drugs

I got Oli to dance and throw his arms around because we want that image in our music video. A weird trippy dance.

I think that Oli would fit the part very well. I think that dancing is spot on and the rebelistic attitude he portrays goes very well.

We came up with the concept of the pinball idea for our video as the song consist of lots of different samples. We were thinking about hiring out a pinball table on the media departments budget. W want to film inside the pinball table and have the ball hitting the different parts of the table and then matching the samples of the song.

We were thinking about green screening Ollie at the end of the video to him in space as ball goes up one of the holes in the machine and it cuts to a game scene. We want to effect to look like a unrealistic cut scene for the table. we want to have him in space and then an alien come out and shoot him with a laser gun and then GAME OVER to come up on the screen.

This is a costume that we found on ebay. our aim is to make the  costume realistic we want a very fake and comic image.

Set designs

These are the sketches we have come up with for our set design. This one is the boy in the corner with the dunce hat in a classroom, for the back drop of the set we are going to use a brick wallpaper to give off a dated impression of the classroom. We are going to use and old fashion chalk board.

We found one in our house at skool that we could very possibly use.

We are going to shoot this set in the studio and for the costume of the school boy we want to use grey shorts, shirt and tie, as the scene will be in black and white we need to think about the variations of shades we could get. For example we could use purple and blue to get those different shades of grey when we turn it to black and white

This is our performance set which design as an cheap and dingy meth lab. We want to set up three tables around the cook and cover them with white cloth. We have got permission from the science department to use their apparatus, e.g flasks and boiling tubes, for the back drop we are going to use a striped plaster wall paper and for the lighting we want to use hanging light with poor lighting to give of the dingy basement effect that we want to achieve.

The jump suits and masks have arrived. This is Gil, the cook and the performance. I think the suits look very realistic as they are real bio hazard suits

Friday, 11 October 2013

This the email that we sent to XL record to ask them if we could use there song, frontier psychiatrist by the avalanches.

We had a talk to luke about our current idea to see if it was relevant and achievable.
We were told to take the detectives out of our video and change the whole story but to keep the concept the same. We came up with the whole idea base around pinball as the song is consisted of lots of different samples much like when the ball hits different parts of the table. We are still keeping the concept of a meth lab but we are going to completely change the whole boy walks around house tripping out. We are going to hire out a pin ball table, one that flashes with bright colours. We are planning on taking the glass of the front and filming close up inside the table. We are going to project scots face onto the ball and have to hitting the different parts that react , then cutting to the different sets, e.g the dunce scene.

The story board and organisation

This week we have completed our story board for our video and drawn all our ideas down so we have a rough visual image here are the pictures.
These first few scenes are shots of the lab equipment, lots of different chemicals mixing around to create a bubbling effect. For the video we are thinking about using bicarbonate soda and vinegar to create a eruption, we are going to use dry ice to get the steam effect of the chemicals, we can get dry ice off the drama department
This is some of the shots of Gil on the decks, who is our dj. I have the decks at my house which is 2 turntables and a mixer, I shall bring these in on the day, I have also ordered the bright yellow jump suit and the chemical gas mask. Here is the link
Suit

Gas mask
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00D9JNA3S/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1380976933&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70

The gas mask is a chemical gas mask and a cheap one so that it gives a off a very dingy look

For these shot we want the chemicals to be reacting and then we want steam to come out by using dry ice and the use the steam to fill up the screen and then act as a transition shot onto the boy going crazy on the chalk board

When the screen fills up with steam we want to editi the shot so that we have a face poking through and lip syncing the words, "dexter is criminally insane" also at the end of the first verse there is a bomb sound that goes off and for this shot we want to use a very old recording of a nucular bomb testing.

At the Beginning of our video there is the sound of galloping and we want to use an old tv advert of a boy on a a rocking horse as in the. Keep we have a theme of toys showing through out as there is a lipsync performance of a head poking out through toys,
There dunce is relates to the criminally insane boy scribbling on the chalk board. There is then shots of him sitting in the corner of the room with a dunce hat on. The shots cut away and back to this shot throughout the first verse the dunce hat will get bigger in each shot until
It eventually takes over him
And then he starts jumping around the room when the third verse drops. We have organised the dunce hats and we are asking the art department for detailes as we are going to construct them outselves,

Throughout our thriller we are going to have  these detectives sneaking about following the narrative, the boy while scribbles on the board, throughout the video we are
Going to have him roaming about a house reacting very wierd to this drug as the detectives Follow him it is his imagination

In the back ground of the dunce scene we are going to have more graphite being added when the camera cuts back to it.

Tuesday, 1 October 2013

In this video there a lot lots of shots of the boy’s face drunk as he moves around the room. You can create this shot by strapping a camera to his chest and the camera flows his boy as he walks around. It gives off a very wavy effect and the surrounds change and tilt and you see his head in the same position. We are going to use this effect with our boy who is on drugs to show the camera his facial expressions and to give off this same effect. for this shot we want our main character, the boy to walk around different shops and  act very wierd

Friday, 27 September 2013

At the beginning of our song there is a horse galloping and the sound of a horse nayying. we were thinking about using an old fashion toy commercial a bit like this video as it relates to the whole toy theme of our video. The toy theme comes from the boys past as we have the boy in the class room with the dunce hat on, that boy is the boy that needs therapy.

we had an idea that we would have the setting as a class room for the boy with the dunce hat and have the chalk board behind him with lots or graffiti scratched into it.
as the video moves on and the scene cut back from one another the dunce hat will get bigger and bigger until it becomes his costume and he will start skanking when the hat takes over. as the lyrics go, "that boy need therapy

The Shamen - Ebeneezer Good

We can relate our idea a lot to this music video by The Shamen. The video is very fast moving and hyper as it relates to the drug ecstasy. The song reference the drug throughout it as the lyrics as “eze a good, ebeze a good”. They have use a sepia filter and flashing over the footage to create a trippy side effect. It is very interesting g by just watching the video we can tell that the video is about a drug trip when you don’t see anyone actually ingesting any form of drug

The style of this video is very similar to the prodigy, outta space video. Yet the prodigy video is much more mellow and chilled out. As our song Frontier Psychiatrist by the avalanches is quite fast b u not to fast we were thinking about having the pace of our video somewhere in between these two videos.  We have to take into account the timings of the cuts in our video. We were thinking that a good pace for our video would be at 2-3 seconds for every cut.

Tuesday, 24 September 2013

Performance element

for the performance of our video we were thinking about having two artists, dj's, in a lab wearing bright yellow bio hazard suits and chemical gas masks. we want the performance to be very quirky as the song is quite random and unusual. the lab is going to be very dingy and basic to give of the impression that it is in a garage or basement. The lab is a drug lab as we are basing our video on a drug trip
This is a picture from breaking bad. this is the sort of style we want to achieve.

This is the sort of setting we were think of for the performance, the setting is a dingy drug lab constructed in a basement or garage. We want the look of the lab to be very scrappy and unorganised with lots of used apparatus lying about. We want there to be 2 partners and a set of turntable decks in the middle of the workstation. The turntables are achievable because I do have some I can bring in. we want the two partners to rotate from one being of the decks mixing and the other one cooking.

Friday, 20 September 2013

This is a music video from the Prodigy song, Out of space. I really enjoy the over contrasted colour filters they use to get a trippy effect.  for another one of our set we were thinking about having two people dancing around, Skanking on a wet floor wearing gas masks and hazard suits with low level lighting and a low shot to get the reflection from the soaked floor. At 2:01 you see a good example of skanking in this costume.

Our chosen idea

After the influence of Luke's talk and the video “I fink your freaky” we decided to chose are a more quirky and unusual style of music video. We chose the song Frontier Psychiatrist by the Avalanches.

The song is by an Australian electronic music group. The song consists of lots of different mixing techniques. It uses scratching and sampling throughout the song.
For our videos we want to use at least 5 different sets and have them flicking through each other throughout the video. The narrative elements of our video is all about a drug trip. A club raver goes into one of the club toilets and pops a pill of acid and has a very bad trip. As soon as he walks out the club door lots of trippy acts start happening. We want to film all our sets in the studio.

Are sets involves.

A white room with a boy with a dunce hat on staring into the corner facing away from the camera, filmed in black and white

The boy will be dressed in old sort of 1920s school boy attire, e.g tweed shorts and jacket and plimsolls

On the right is a screen shot from the Die Antwood music video, "I fink your freaky", we were think about using this type of freaky dancing and tone of atmosphere in the dunce set. we were think about have the boy in the corner just staring into it, not moving and having some weird dancing in the other corner of the room with a man in a black cloak, filmed from a long shot.  and on the white wall we were thinking about having some weird drawings like the ones Die Antwood used. I find this seen in their video very interesting as there is a big clash contrast between the girl sitting down facing the camera, completely still and the man raving in the other corner. I think that it is a really cool effect.

this is the video from Die Antwood, 0:32 in the video is were the wierd dancing takes place.

For our second set we want the lip sync vocal performance to be from for detectives looking down at the camera as if the raver has passed out on the floor looking up at them. as the song consists of many different sampled voices. we want each of the detectives to have their own sample through out the song. e.g "that boy needs therapy.  we want to add a sepia effect to this set and we want the detectives to look like a stereo typical detective form tv, for example pink panther.
we want all of these set to be part of the boys imagination and some relate to tv or events that he has watched or experienced.
